DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE NUMEROUS DECISIONS THAT ARE UP TO YOU WHEN IT’S TIME FOR LABOR AND DELIVERY?
Growing up, everything that I knew about birth was from movies or tv shows…basically the laboring mum shows up to the hospital and follows the directions of the nurses & Dr. as she’s screaming in agony until finally baby is born. Every. Single. Time.
When it was my turn as an expecting mummy, I felt that there had to be a more gentle and positive birthing experience that would also allow me to take part in making the decisions. I didn’t like the idea of screaming my way through birth. After I did a bit of my own research, I was led to Hypnobirthing..most often stereotyped as “The hippy way” of giving birth naturally.
Honestly, I felt really excited but nervous at the same time about the classes. “Maybe this isn’t for me.” “How on Earth can I handle a natural birth and live through the pain.” “I’m not into hypnosis.” Etc. But I have to say..after the first class, all of my doubts and worries were put at ease! The amount of information that I was given in just that first class was outstanding and absolutely made it worth taking the classes! By the end of the series of classes, I felt so sure and empowered about birth because I understood the entire laboring and birthing process as well as what kind of options I had to choose from.
THERE IS NOT ONLY ONE BIRTH EXPERIENCE,
and all the choices are yours! You don’t have to be stuck in a bed, on your back, pushing your heart out at the coaching of a nurse. You don’t have to be induced with pitocin. You don’t have to be hooked up to all of the monitors. You don’t even have to get an IV! Well, unless you want to of course. You can choose to walk around, sit on a birthing ball, lay in a bath, and do what feels right to you and your laboring body, the decisions are literally yours to make.
Every expecting mum I meet, the advice I like to give if asked, is to simply get educated. Know your options. Know what’s necessary and what isn’t. Make your birthing experience YOURS by the power of knowledge. I 100% believe that things don’t go as planned and when things are medically needed for you and baby to be safe…follow those instructions. But, you can still be educated about those situations and take part in the decision making. You are, after all, the one hiring the nursing and Dr. staff! I hope that this post will help inspire expecting mums to get educated, to make choices themselves, and most importantly, to make their birthing experience their own!
